How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, replacement car key audi still shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor.
