How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure website between pins 1 click here (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to here engine shutdown.

5. Tachometer
